About
What is MoochIt?
MoochIt is a borrowing and lending site for people who don't want to pay for items that they could borrow for free.
We all have items lying around the house that we aren't using. Instead of letting those items collect dust, MoochIt encourages you to lend them out so that others may benefit from them. MoochIt makes it easy for you to catalog your unused items as well as search your friends, neighbors, coworkers, colleagues, and classmates unused items. Why buy or rent when you can MoochIt for free?
Here are just a few ways you can use MoochIt:
- Find that tool you need for your weekend project
- Check out that DVD for movie night
- Read that bestseller that everyone's talking about
- Preview that purchase that you aren't quite sure about
- And many more, all for free!
How do I mooch an item?
Step 1: Find It
Use the search bar to search for items that other users have listed on MoochIt. You can be as specific or vague as you like. For instance, you could search for "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" under the category "Movies & TV" near "1600 Amphitheatre Parkway Mountain View, CA 94043". Or you could simply search for all items near "90210".
Step 2: View It
Once you find an item you think you may want to mooch, click on it to view its detail page. Here you can review any additional information the owner may have listed as well as any information we were able to dig up on the item from Amazon.
Step 3: Mooch It!
Click on the "Mooch It" button and we'll notify the owner that you wish to mooch the item from them. At that point, it's up to the owner to determine whether, when, and how they wish to lend the item to you. That's all there is to it!
How do others mooch from me?
Once you are a registered user, you will be able to list your own items on MoochIt. When another user wishes to mooch one of your items, you will be notified via e-mail about the request. You should then contact the user directly via MoochIt's messaging system to make the necessary arrangements to complete the transaction.
If you ever lose track of who's asking for what and which items you have lent out, don't worry! You can view all of this information and more on your MoochIt profile page.
What are networks?
Networks make it easy for you to borrow and lend from the people you interact with the most. Networks allow you to narrow down your searches to specific groups of people like your friends, family, classmates, neighbors, and colleagues.
What is reputation?
Reputation is MoochIt's way of judging a user's trustworthiness. The higher a user's reputation, the better. Reputation is earned whenever you borrow an item (and return it!) or lend out an item. Reputation can also be earned, or lost, after you return an item based on how well the lender thought the transaction went. This allows lenders to punish borrowers who return items late or in a damaged condition.
Here's a list of all the ways to gain and lose reputation:
- Borrow and return an item: +10 reputation
- Lend out an item: +20 reputation
- Lender gives you a positive rating: +20 reputation
- Lender gives you a negative rating: -100 reputation
- Give a borrower a positive rating: +20 reputation
- Give a borrower a negative rating: -10 reputation
What are badges?
Badges are a fun way of rewarding users for participating on MoochIt. There are three types of badges that you can earn on MoochIt: gold, silver, and bronze. Visit the badges page for a complete listing of all available badeges.

What happens if someone breaks / doesn't return my stuff?
MoochIt is not responsible for your items or your safety. Use your best judgment when it comes to borrowing and lending with users on MoochIt. MoochIt's reputation and badge system is there to serve as a way to help you determine a user's trustworthiness, but it's far from perfect. If you don't feel comfortable lending an item out or borrowing an item from someone on MoochIt, then don't do it.
